Rory McIlroy's house in Northern Ireland on the market for £2m

02 October 2012

The world's number one golfer, who played a crucial part in Europe's Ryder Cup win this weekend, has put his home in Moneyreagh, County Down, up for sale.

Situated in the hills south-east of Belfast, the gorgeous five-bedroom property features a putting green with bunkers, as well as a driving range. The home also has a range of less-specialised modern features, including a gym, high-tech entertainment system and double-height windows, as well as a pretty pond.

"I have really enjoyed living here," McIlroy says. "It is a really special place which has allowed me to relax and unwind - when I get time."

McIlroy, 22, bought the house in 2009, but spends an increasing proportion of his time in America, as well as up to 50 weeks a year on the road, playing in tournaments. But only a year ago, he said that he imagined himself "always" living there.

"With the privacy and seclusion of the location it is hard to believe the house is only 25 minutes from Belfast city centre and City airport," he adds, alluding to his hectic schedule.

"The space the house offers is bright and airy and there are views over the gardens and the pond from most rooms. The house has always been busy with friends and family and has suited us on all occasions."

McIlroy has said that he'll always consider Northern Ireland home, and his family still live in the area. For budding golfers, or those simply looking for a modern house in a timeless setting, it could be a hole in one.
