#Movember: What it means & how you should stay protected

18 November 2016

  • Men all over the country will be growing out their facial hair for Movember this month

  • Run by the Movember Foundation, it is an attempt to raise awareness & funding for men’s cancer & health issues

  • Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK. (1)

  • The term “Movember” was coiled in 2003 after 2 men convinced their friends to bring back the lost trend of the moustache. At the same time, their friend’s mother was fundraising money for breast cancer which inspired them to revive the “mo” trend through raising awareness about men’s health. (2) The two combine to raise money for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention by men growing their moustache for 30 days & being sponsored by friends & family for it.

  • Why? Because they claim that these are health issues least spoken about “Our fathers, partners, brothers and friends face a health crisis that isn’t being talked about. They are dying too young, before their time” (3)

According to Cancer Research UK prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in males, in addition to being the second most common cancer in the UK after breast cancer (4) In most cases, there aren’t usually many symptoms of prostate cancer which could be part of the reason why it is one of the most common types of cancer amongst men. However some men could notice urinary problems (5)

  • Unlike prostate cancer, testicular is a relatively rare type of cancer which accounts for just 1% of cancers in men. Whilst it is rare overall, it is one of the most common cancers in young men aged between 15-49. The number of cases diagnosed with testicular cancer since the 1970s has doubled. (6)  The Movember Foundation website states “A 95% chance of survival is cold comfort to the 1 in 20 men who dies from testicular cancer. This is why we have to help them & stop men from dying too young”. (7)

It is too easy to think that the above types of cancers could never come close enough to our homes, but the statistics suggest otherwise. What would happen to you if you were unable to work due to an illness or accident? Having mortgage protection such as life cover, critical illness cover & income protection can help you & your family cope financially should you be faced with one of these unfortunate situations.
